Caliach Vision Support Service - 31st Aug 2016

As you will recall from previous news emails from us that our Support Service has had to be re-organised following the premature retirement of Paul Wilson who many of you will have got to know directly. A good part of the reason for his retirement was a growing tendency of a minority of sites to use the service in an inappropriate and sometimes aggressive way. His long-standing desire to meet every caller's needs put more and more pressure on him until it became too much for him. This is neither equitable or sustainable.

The reason for this trend amongst a minority of sites seems to be a desire to minimise their costs on ongoing re-training and/or simply using our support service as a substitute for internal resources that have retired or have been otherwise overloaded by other responsibilities. New staff are not being trained but are being expected to call up our support service.

To help you and your staff understand how our Caliach Support works we have drawn up a Knowledge Base article titled Understanding Caliach Support Service.

Caliach Vision V5 News - 31st July 2016

Caliach Vision V5.0400 was released yesterday. We now have 12 operational sites with 156 daily users working on V5. With this latest release, we have built on the experience with these pioneer V5 sites and added some 55 enhancements in the process.

Due to the re-organisation of our front-line support over the last two months, following the early retirement of Paul Wilson, we were forced to suspend further V5 Migrations.

With the release of V5.0400 we can restart the program of migrations. Quotations previously prepared over a year ago now have long since expired and in any event, we have now much greater experience to offer a more reliable estimate of the time involved in the work. If you had received a quotation previously, please request an updated one and indicate when you may want to migrate. If you have not yet received a Quotation, please request one by replying to this email and include the following:

  1. What version of Caliach Vision are you running?
  2. A copy of your ProgCode.usa file (found beside your datafile set), so we can estimate customisation conversion.
  3. Tell us the size of your datafile set (.df1, .df2, etc), the number of these 'segments' is sufficient.
  4. Whether you have just the one datafile sets, or multiple, or historic backup sets that you would need to migrate.
  5. When you would prefer the work to be carried out.

One thing we have found almost universally, is that sites that have been operating Caliach Vision for many years have become a little rusty and can benefit from top-up training.

Migrating to V5 is a step change in scalability, performance, reliability, efficiency and data openness. It also keeps you compatible with the latest operating systems.

Caliach Vision V5.04 Upgrade Available to V5.03xx Sites - 26th July 2016

We have just released V5.0400 which builds on the success of V5.03xx on which 12 sites are now operating minute by minute. It is a further refinement of our client-server implementation of Caliach Vision and addresses a number of issues raised by the experience of V5 pioneers, including:

  1. Rationalisation of user logon and logoff processing with the elimination of the current-user-list to control licensed users access. This should make the licensed user limit more flexible with idle users ignored. Also the new token system makes single-user activities interactive with other users. A limit of user idleness, defaulting to 8 hours, has been provided to punish those that do not logoff at the end of their shift. The User Session Log is automatically cleansed of old data.
  2. A new terminal option to hide the Logon Settings button in the User Logon window has been added.
  3. In-Transaction user data entry has been eliminated. This typically related to options, such as Quality Assurance Results or Non-Conformance Reports entry, that took place within a serialisable transactions and thus could cause deadlocks for the entire database.
  4. Statements.db, Strings-??.str and DynamicLang-??.db files have been moved from the Extras folder to the Terminal folder so now can not be held centrally on the server (in Server Folder). This is to avoid conflicts during program upgrades.
  5. Selection and Reporting windows now have refined Adhoc extra where and Adhoc pre-sort fields that combine entry and lists of previously used clauses. The lists operate on a last-used first-in-first-out basis, defaulting to a maximum of 10 per context (an option can extend this limit). Those available are not restricted to the individual user that applied the clause, but all users, making them a business-wide resource.
  6. A new indexed column BUDPERN has been added to the G/L History (BUDFILE) table. This will allow better performance of Financial Statement reports and KPIs in the future.
  7. The new V5to4Upgrade.lbs tool takes V4.1 data directly to a V5.04 database.

V5.0400 is a full install major release and NOT an Upgrade Via the Internet maintenance release. It has no known impact on any site customisation. It uses the same Omnis Studio V6.1.2 as V5.03xx and employs no additional software, nor requires any database engine upgrade.

Caliach Vision Support Change - June 2016 - 25th May 2016

This summer, Caliach will be restructuring our front-line customer support. From 15th June 2016 we are switching over to a team-based IT support partner with broad experience of business software support. With the upgrading of Caliach Vision to industrial strength client-server standards we recognise that the resources we have in-house should be expanded to meet our responsibility to our growing number of users.

We have therefore teamed up with a well established business, Lineal Software Solutions Ltd., based in Barnstable, North Devon, UK to provide us with this support for our users.

Lineal share important skills with our Caliach team that make this partnership particularly valuable to your needs as a Caliach Vision user. With over 25 years experience of Omnis (the software under which Caliach Vision runs) and experience with both ERP software and IT support for manufacturers from diverse industries, We are confident they will provide a high-quality support service for Caliach customers.

Caliach Vision and Microsoft Security Update - 19th Apr 2016

Only read-on if you use Caliach Vision, use an earlier version than 4.10, and operate on MS Windows machines.

Microsoft Windows Security Update KB3145739

On 12th April Microsoft issued a security update (MS16-039 see https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3145739) that causes problems to drop-down lists in older versions of Omnis, the underlying framework that Caliach Vision runs on. This security update fixes vulnerabilities in certain operating system graphics functions. Older versions of Omnis use some of the functions effected. This normally would not have any negative impact on programs, but in this case it does. The update effects Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1 10 and Windows Server 2008, 2012.

With the security update installed, drop-down lists open behind the main window, making them unusable. Other programs may well exhibit similar problems. Unfortunately, it is not possible to be specific as to which combinations of operating system and Omnis suffer from this problem. It does seem that Caliach Vision V3.1 which runs under Omnis 4 is particularly vulnerable. Caliach Vision V4.1xxx which uses Omnis V5.2.3.4 which is not effected.

Ideally, we would recommend you to upgrade to at least Caliach Vision V4.1. It is the case, however, that if you remove/uninstall the KB3145739 security update the problem with drop-lists goes away.

Caliach Vision V5 News - 29th Feb 2016

Caliach Vision V5.0312 was released today. We now have 8 operational sites with 119 daily users. With this latest release, we have re-worked our Key Performance Indicator standards and added a simple process to import sets of KPIs with all their associated components ready-to-go. KPIs, for those of you unfamiliar, are typically graphical representations of summary data that can give a near instant comparative measure of some aspect of your business performance. For instance, Work Centre Utilisation, Customer Overdue Invoices, etc.. The standards available cover all aspects from sales through works and accounts, often comparing data over days, weeks, months or years so you can see exactly how you are doing and what issues need addressing. They are centrally managed and can be targeted to pop-up for individual users or groups of users at specific times and periodically. Once our standards are imported you can tweak them to specific needs or ask us to help you get exactly what you want.

During the year-long initial program of UK site migrations we have provided a hidden subsidy covering staff international travel cost to the UK. It is not possible to maintain this subsidy after 31st March 2016, so thereafter UK sites will be treated the same as our non-UK sites have been and will have to bear (or share if two or more can be done concurrently) international travel costs, which could add as much a GBP 2,000.00 to the costs of migrations to V5 after March. Although you will, of course, benefit substantially from the experience of the pioneering migrations.

During March three more sites are booked to migrate to V5, however there is still space available in the diary for 2 more in the later part of the month (or for 1 large site), however, if you want to take up this opportunity you need to book now.

Caliach Vision V5 News - 4th Feb 2016

Caliach Vision V5 now has 8 sites operational including 2 new sites and 1 CaliachMRP migration. During January it has settled down and it's been over a week now since we had a problem reported.

So now you have built up experience it may be a good time to consider deepening or extending your use of the program. "No! We've had enough of you!", I hear you shout! But on the off-chance that you have unfulfilled needs, I will be back in the UK during March and have time available from 14th March onwards.

TO UPGRADE

Go into Caliach Vision and operate File -- Advanced -- Upgrade Via the Internet. Then enter your FTP username and password (found on the re-license summary document you get every year). And then click Download. Overwrite any existing files if it askes. The program will restart and automatically restart your session. If you are not the only user on the database it will balk at upgrading the database. At this point wait until everyone else is out of the database and then attampt a logon again. You will then be upgraded.

MRP Processing

The work done to improve MRP Processing performance has proved a failure and we have now reverted to code prior to the changes for F0559. While processing times were reduced subtle changes in the way the results were inserted and updated meant the results were not consistent with previous versions. We will continue to investigate this with the view to implement the performance gains without loss of results reliability.
