Linked Files System: OLE Document

OLE Document

OLE Link window

For a general introduction to the operation of the Linked Files System see the Introduction topic.

Windows WINDOWS ONLY: This window will only operate on Windows operating system.

This window will open if you have a currently selected linkable data record, of a type using the wLinkOLE class, and you operate the ScratchPads — Open Link (F11 key) menu function or you click on the link Link icon.

The window contains the Display Window Toolbar.

This window uses the Omnis Studio OLE Picture External Control window object.

The window will provide an interface to OLE (Object Linking and Embedding) Automation. Unlike other link display windows it does not derive it’s link through a file path stored in the link datafile. The link is set up in the viewer window itself using special Edit menu functions. To enable the menu items, click on the window main area first (a dotted border will show).

OLE Edit Menu functions

Insert Object

This opens the Insert Object dialogue in which you can create an object from any OLE aware program installed on your terminal.

Insert Object Create New dialog

Alternatively, you can Create From File which will take an existing file. In this case you have the choice to store the contents of the file or a picture of it and a link to the original using the Link checkbox.

Insert Object Create from file dialog

Having completed your document selection a picture of the document will be placed in the OLE window and, depending on your choices, the contents of the document or a link to it will be stored along with the display picture.

This picture and OLE data must be saved in the Link record (in LKFPICT) and therefore there is a tool Save activated on the toolbar to save the link picture contents. This must be used after any modification before the window is closed.

Object (or other menu item depending on the OLE Automation program)

The centre menu item provides for functions associated with the saved OLE document and will vary with the program that the document is associated with.

This menu items enables you to manage the link associated with the current OLE Document.
