OVERVIEW

Capacity Planning gives time information obtained from existing Works Orders and Jobs. There is also an option to include MRP forecast requirements too. The analysis is based on process route operation times and work centre parameters.

NOTE: Capacity Planning is only available to those who have the manufacturing license option version of the programme

File Path

Process > Capacity Planning

This file path takes you to the Capacity Planning menu.

Run Capacity Analysis

This takes you to the Capacity Planning Run Selection window.

In this window you will be offered options for the run or re-run capacity analysis.

Operation scheduling will apply to your selection of un-kitted, kitted, backflushed and/or MRP forecast Work Orders and/or Job Operations providing Kit-To, Work Centre Load and Make-To listings and reports. The results of analysis are not saved in the data file.

BUTTONS AND FIELDS

Analysis Extent Date

Enter the final date to which results are to be shown for.

Un-kitted Works Orders

Tick to include operations from normal Works Orders that are not yet kitted.

Kitted Works Orders

Tick to include operations from normal Works Orders that have been kitted

Backflushed Works Orders

Tick to include operations from Backflushed Works Orders.

Job Operations

Tick to include operations from Jobs.

MRP Forecast Work Orders up to:

Tick to include operations from MRP Forecast Works Orders up to the entered date.

If you choose to include MRP forecast Work Orders, you may limit the extent of the calendar that is included. If limited, recommended orders for completion up to the date entered will be included in the analysis prefixed with the letter M.

Or Make days

Enter the limiting number of active Make days in the calendar for MRP forecasting Work Orders.

Cancel button

Selecting this aborts the process currently in session.

Run button

This runs the capacity planning analysis. The data is collected and held in memory. When the Capacity task closes you lose the data.

SHOW CALENDAR

Selecting this option from the dropdown menu will first bring up the Capacity Planning Run Selection. Once you run capacity planning, the Make Days Calendar window opens.

This window shows a listing of all days in the MRP system’s calendar that have been marked as active Make Days. Click here for our Make Days Calendar guide.

SHOW WORK CENTRES

You will find a list of all your work centres with details in this window.

Click here for Work Centre List guide.

SHOW WORK OPERATION LIST

This window shows a list of all operations to be carried out on Works Orders Job Operations and, if selected, MRP forecast Works Orders.

SHOW WO KIT-TO LIST

This window shows which Work Orders should be kitted and, if the sort is selected correctly, in which order, what assemblies are being manufactured and when the kits should be issued and to which Work Centre.

The Work Centre shown is that for the first operation. These dates may differ from MRP recommendations which are based on parent part lead time and not Operation times from Process Routes.

Additionally, Work Centre available hours are taken into account. However, for all orders only one Work Centre is assumed to be involved in each operation – no account is taken of the quantity of Work Centres.

If you double-click on a Work Order or Job Operation, a review window will be opened showing the Work Order or Job Operation details. Re-scheduling can then be made interactively. This is only possible, of course, with genuine Work Orders or Job Operation.

SHOW WC LOADING

This opens the Work Centre Loading Chart (this window has two tabs) and the Work Centre List window. Clicking a work centre in the Work Centre List window will show an analysis of a work centre’s operation loading over the period of activity within the calendar dates.

Work Operations List

This window shows all operations to be carried out on Work Orders, Job Operations and, if selected, MRP forecast WOs. This listing is the base for other listings available under the Capacity Planning menu.

If MRP forecast Work Orders have been selected, they will be given a “Mnnnnn” Work Order Number. The ‘nnnnn’ is in sequence of the MRP planned completion date. Recommended orders are only included if they have not been marked as implemented during Create WOs from Results function in MRP. Icons in the Status column indicate Job Operations and work order status as shown in the icon key below the list.

Work Centre available, Start, Set, Run, Lag and End times are all shown in hours to 2 decimal places and must not be confused with hours and minutes. The End time and Available date is the exact point that the batch must be ready for the next operation, or for the assembly to be entered into stock. This point is then used to calculate back the Start time and Kit date for the commencement of the process operation. This point is then used as the End time and Available date for the preceding operation. By clicking on a list line you will select both the Work Order and the Work Centre of that line for use in further analysis in other capacity planning windows.

For Operations carried out in Outwork Work Centres (marked on the right with an appropriate icon), only the Lag Time is considered for scheduling purposes. The Setup and Run times are recorded on the Process Route for costing purposes. If you widen the window or scroll to the left, further Work Centre details are shown.

Capacity Scheduler Data Transfer – Preactor

Reference Contents > Capacity Planning > Capacity Scheduler Data Transfer – Preactor

NOTE: Scheduler Transfers is not available to those who have not installed the LicCapacityTransfer license option. Contact your software supplier if it is unavailable.

Scheduler Transfers is a feature that provide for data transfer of Capacity information from Caliach Vision to other programs, typically Finite Schedulers.

Preactor

Caliach provides an in-out data link with Preactor 200, 300 and 400 finite scheduler software package. Preactor is a available from Caliach Ltd but is a product of The Preactor International Ltd, Cornbrash Park, Bumpers Way, Chippenham, Wiltshire, England, SN14 6RA (Tel: +44 1249 650316, Fax: +44 1249 443413, Email: sales@preactor.com). Visit their web site at www.preactor.com.

The Directory Path is used to identify the directory in which all your export and import files are stored on your computer. If it is left blank, you will be prompted and will need to enter a temporary file name (the file created will be automatically deleted). The directory should be the directory that contains the Preactor.inf file, used to run Preactor. The directory path and other settings are stored in the program for subsequent re-use.

Caliach ships a standard set of Preactor files including a Preactor.inf and Preactor.ini. These must be used with the Caliach Vision link, otherwise field mapping will fail.

CUSTOM CAPABILITY: You can customise the Preactor environment to the extent of exporting substitutes or additional data stored in the Extra field of process route operations (see Process Routes). If there is no entry in this field the default is set to “” 1 5 “” 1 5. This data is: Secondary resources 1, Resource quantity (integer), Capacity Use (1-15), Secondary resources 2, Resource quantity (integer), Capacity Use (1-15). Capacity use is:
1, Increment from Start:
2, Increment from End:
3, Decrement from Start:
4, Decrement from End:
5, Increment Process Time Only:
6, Decrement Process Time Only:
7, No Change:
8, Increment To End:
9, Decrement To End:
10, Increment Setup Time Only:
11, Decrement Setup Time Only:
12, Increment From Start Of Setup:
13, Decrement From Start Of Setup:
14, Increment For Entire Job:
15, Decrement For Entire Job;
Secondary resources, if used, must be set up inside Preactor before import.
You can, at your own risk, change the Preactor.inf file to define more extensive information export from Caliach Vision, If so, you must populate the Process Route operations Extra field with appropriate full export data strings.

Export to Preactor

The Export to Preactor function creates a new orders file and exports all operational data from the Operations List created when you entered Capacity Planning. This file is named NewOrders.imp and can subsequently be read by Preactor.

You can also check the option to export Resources and Groups. This will use the Work Centres data to create Resource.pdb and Groups.pdb files. This will initially populate your Resources and Groups database in Preactor. Once setup you should refrain from re-exporting this data as you can set additional resource and group parameters in Preactor that will be cancelled when you re-export.

Having exported the data to, You need to run Preactor and select Data Transfer Menu on the main menu, then Import Caliach Vision Data to Preactor in the Data Transfer menu.

Any new Work Order operations will be imported and you proceed with Preactor scheduling activities.

NOTE: Importing Caliach Vision data does not delete Work Orders completed in Caliach Vision. You must delete completed orders yourself within the Preactor program.

Import from Preactor

Once you have completed your scheduling in Preactor, you can use the Import function to optionally do two things:

Check for order shortages: In your scheduling you may well move operations back and forward in time such that components will not be available or customer deliveries will be delayed. Preactor has no knowledge of such consequences, however Caliach Vision does and this process enables you to see any conflicts arising out of the re-scheduling in Preactor. An Alert Message lists all conflicts found.

Update Work Order completion dates: Scheduling in Preactor may have led to some Work Order completion data changes. These can be passed to Caliach Vision. Subsequent MRP runs will then more accurately reflect your true plans, if you update demand dates, e.g. sales orders, plans, etc.

To process an Import, you first need to export your data from Preactor. To do this you need to run Preactor and select Data Transfer Menu on the main menu, then Export Data for Caliach Vision in the Data Transfer menu. The file created is named Schedout.csv and can subsequently be read by Caliach Vision.

Work Centre Loading Chart

Reference Contents > Capacity Planning > Work Centre Loading Chart

This window shows an analysis of a Work Centre’s Operation loading over its period of activity within the calendar and extent date.

A Work Centre must have been previously selected by clicking on an appropriate list line which is specific to a Work Centre or in the Work Centre List window.

You can view capacity by operating the Analysis by Department menu function. If this is the case the loading will be for all Work Centres that have the same Department as the currently selected Work Centre.

The window has 2 tab panes.

Listing

This shows the loading in a list form.

The analysis uses the Work Operation list data. The Set, Run and Lag hours of loading for each day are shown and a bar chart produced on the right of the list. Each icon block of a bar represents 10% of the available load for that Work Centre. Available load is considered to be Work Centre Available hours times Quantity. The colours represent Set, Run and Lag times. Totals and daily average over the calendar period are shown at the bottom of the window.

If the Ignore Lag in Loading Chart menu option has been set, which is indicated by a check mark on the menu line, all lag times will be ignored in the presentation of the chart and the report.

This window can be left open and you can readily switch between it and others by clicking on the desired window with the mouse. All capacity planning windows operate interactively.

Double-clicking on a loading date line will bring forward the Work Order List window containing a list of all Work Orders or Jobs due to be processed on that day by that Work Centre. This list can be used to select a Work Order or Job Operation and change its due date if re-scheduling is needed. See the Work Order List for details.

This window shows a list of all Operation activity for the currently selected Work Centre or Department. This is a sub-set of the Work Operations listing and forms a Make-to listing for the Work Centre or Department.

This window can be left open and you can readily switch between it and others by clicking on the desired window with the mouse.

NOTE: Every time a Work Order is created on the system a copy of the operational Process Route is created and held against that specific Work Order. When the WO is cancelled or completed, the route is automatically deleted. Work History records the operational activity. At the time of creating the WO you can amend the standard route, that can contain alternate operations. Capacity Planning takes account of the stored WO-specific route. Shopfloor activity and Work History reflects the stored route rather than the design Process Route. When creating a WO you can even drop standard operations which have no alternates and add completely new operations specific to the particular WO. Once the WO has been created, it is independent of the design Process Route.

There are some rules and restrictions that apply:

Any change can be made to the operations of a WO before it has been saved to the database.

If the WO has not been kitted or backflushed, changes can be made to the operations.

If any outwork operation has been placed on a Purchase Order or RFQ, that operation cannot have it’s operation number or work centre changed while it is still subject to a PO or RFQ.

If some of the WO has been received, or Shopfloor data collected for the final operation, the final operation number cannot be removed or changed, nor can a higher operation number be added to the WO route. However, the details of the final operation, including Work Centre, can be changed.

If an assembly has a Process Route, you cannot eliminate all operations for a particular Work Order. At least one must remain.
