Capacity Planning gives time information obtained from existing Works Orders and Jobs. There is also an option to include MRP forecast requirements too. The analysis is based on process route operation times and work centre parameters.

NOTE: Capacity Planning is only available to those who have the manufacturing license option version of the programme

File Path

Process > Capacity Planning

This file path takes you to the Capacity Planning menu.

Run Capacity Analysis

This takes you to the Capacity Planning Run Selection window.

In this window you will be offered options for the run or re-run capacity analysis.

Operation scheduling will apply to your selection of un-kitted, kitted, backflushed and/or MRP forecast Work Orders and/or Job Operations providing Kit-To, Work Centre Load and Make-To listings and reports. The results of analysis are not saved in the data file.

BUTTONS AND FIELDS

Analysis Extent Date

Enter the final date to which results are to be shown for.

Un-kitted Works Orders

Tick to include operations from normal Works Orders that are not yet kitted.

Kitted Works Orders

Tick to include operations from normal Works Orders that have been kitted

Backflushed Works Orders

Tick to include operations from Backflushed Works Orders.

Job Operations

Tick to include operations from Jobs.

MRP Forecast Work Orders up to:

Tick to include operations from MRP Forecast Works Orders up to the entered date.

If you choose to include MRP forecast Work Orders, you may limit the extent of the calendar that is included. If limited, recommended orders for completion up to the date entered will be included in the analysis prefixed with the letter M.

Or Make days

Enter the limiting number of active Make days in the calendar for MRP forecasting Work Orders.

Cancel button

Selecting this aborts the process currently in session.

Run button

This runs the capacity planning analysis. The data is collected and held in memory. When the Capacity task closes you lose the data.

SHOW CALENDAR

Selecting this option from the dropdown menu will first bring up the Capacity Planning Run Selection. Once you run capacity planning, the Make Days Calendar window opens.

This window shows a listing of all days in the MRP system’s calendar that have been marked as active Make Days. Click here for our Make Days Calendar guide.

SHOW WORK CENTRES

You will find a list of all your work centres with details in this window.

Click here for Work Centre List guide.

SHOW WORK OPERATION LIST

This window shows a list of all operations to be carried out on Works Orders Job Operations and, if selected, MRP forecast Works Orders.

SHOW WO KIT-TO LIST

This window shows which Work Orders should be kitted and, if the sort is selected correctly, in which order, what assemblies are being manufactured and when the kits should be issued and to which Work Centre.

The Work Centre shown is that for the first operation. These dates may differ from MRP recommendations which are based on parent part lead time and not Operation times from Process Routes.

Additionally, Work Centre available hours are taken into account. However, for all orders only one Work Centre is assumed to be involved in each operation – no account is taken of the quantity of Work Centres.

If you double-click on a Work Order or Job Operation, a review window will be opened showing the Work Order or Job Operation details. Re-scheduling can then be made interactively. This is only possible, of course, with genuine Work Orders or Job Operation.

SHOW WC LOADING

This opens the Work Centre Loading Chart (this window has two tabs) and the Work Centre List window. Clicking a work centre in the Work Centre List window will show an analysis of a work centre’s operation loading over the period of activity within the calendar dates.

Work Centre or Department

This field show the Work Centre unique identifier code that is currently being worked on.

Quantity

This field shows the quantity of work centres available for planning.

Availability

This shows the hours available in each make day for the current work centre.

Loading List

Here we see the work centre loading for all working days in the make calendar.

Total Working days

This is the total number of make days in the listing.

Set – Total in plan

The total set-up hours for all operations in the forecast.

Set – Daily average

The total set-up hours for all operations in the forecast.

Run – Total in plan

Total run hours for all operations in the forecast

Run – Daily average

The daily average run hours for all operations over the working days listed.

Lag – Total in plan

The total lag hours for all operations in the forecast.

Lag – Daily average

The daily average lag hours for all operations over the working days listed.

Graphical tab

This tab shows the loading in graph form.

Selected lines only box

Tick box to show only the selected dates in the list.

Start date slider

Use this to adjust the start of dates shown. The range is from the beginning date on the list up to the date 95% through the list.

Date extent slider

Use this to adjust the extent of the dates shown. The range is from 5% to 100% of the number of dates in the list.

SHOW WC MAKE TO LIST

This window shows a list of all Operation activity for the currently selected work centre or department. The Work Centre list window will also open.

Work Centre

This is the unique identifier for the currently selected work centre. You can select the work centre by double clicking the desired work centre in the Work Centre list window.

Description of the currently selected work centre.

Quantity

The quantity of the selected work centres available for planning

Available hours per day

Available hours in each make day for the selected work centre

Make-to list

This is a list of all operations that are forecast for the selected Work Centre. Typically, in order that they need to be processed.

Total Hours

Total hours for all operations shown on the Make-to list

Total Operations

Total number of operations listed.

IGNORE LAG IN LOADING CHART

Clicking this on the Capacity Planning menu will ignore all lag in the loading chart.

ANALYSIS BY DEPARTMENT

Clicking this on the Capacity Planning menu will allow you to see all work centres within a department in the Work Centre Make-To list and Work Centre Loading Chart windows.

SCHEDULER TRANSFERS

This feature provides for data transfer of Capacity information from Caliach Vision to other programs, typically Finite Schedulers.

PRINT WORK CENTRE LIST

Selecting this will display a list of all work centres with details of each. You can select how you print this page.

PRINT WORK OPERATION LIST

Selecting this will display a list of all work operations with details of each. You can select how you print this page.

PRINT WO KIT TO LIST

This brings up the Capacity Report Options window.

This window provides you with options when printing Wo Kit-To list, WC Loading and WC Make-To lists.

BUTTONS AND FIELDS

Date from and to

Here you can enter the dates that restricts the records selected. If left blank, data will be selected from the maximum and minimum extremes in the file. All selections criteria you enter will have to be met by each record processed.

All Work Centres or Departments

Selecting this option will provide you with a report covering all Work Centres or Departments as opposed to the currently selected. This option is not available for the WO Kit-to list reports.

Do Not Show Days with No Loading

Choose this option if you want to suppress printing of days without activity. This option is not available for WO Kit-To List or WC Make-To List reports.

Exclude Kitted Works Orders

This selection will provide you with a report omitting any Work Orders that have been kitted. This option is not available for WO Kit-To List or WC Loading reports.

Show Parts Descriptions

Provides an extra line showing part description. This option is not available for WO Kit-To List or WC Loading reports.

Subtotal Quantity on Sort Column

Ticking this box will give you a subtotal of quantities on sort columns.

Cancel button

This button will abort the process currently in session.

Print button

This will cause a report to be printed of the subject matter. Right click to change the report destination.

PRINT WC LOADING

This will bring up the Capacity Report Options window with All Work Centres or Departments already selected, the Do Not Show Days with No Loading available to select and all other options not available.

PRINT WC MAKE-TO LIST

This will bring up the Capacity Report Options window with All Work Centres or Departments already selected, the other options available to be selected excluding the Do Not Show Days with No Loading option.

WO Completion Date Change

This window enables you to review a Work Order and re-schedule its completion date by selecting a new date in the list. The window opens when you double-click on a Work Order in the Work Centre Make-To List or in the Work Orders window which is opened by double-clicking on a load line in the Work Centre Loading Chart window.

Using the list on the right of the window you can select a new completion date. If you then confirm with an OK all Capacity Planning lists are re-calculated to reflect the new completion date.

Button	Action
Change Route…	Click to amend the route operations that will apply to the Work Order. Any changes will effect operation loading listings, when confirmed. This button control opens the Work Order Operation List Maintenance window to permit changes to the operational route for the single selected WO. After amendment, if the Apply To WO button is not clicked, the selected WO will have the assembly’s standard route of operations. NOTE: Every time a Work Order is created on the system a copy of the operational Process Route is created and held against that specific Work Order. When the WO is cancelled or completed, the route is automatically deleted. Work History records the operational activity. At the time of creating the WO you can amend the standard route, that can contain alternate operations. Capacity Planning takes account of the stored WO-specific route. Shopfloor activity and Work History reflects the stored route rather than the design Process Route. When creating a WO you can even drop standard operations which have no alternates and add completely new operations specific to the particular WO. Once the WO has been created, it is independent of the design Process Route. There are some rules and restrictions that apply: Any change can be made to the operations of a WO before it has been saved to the database. If the WO has not been kitted or backflushed, changes can be made to the operations. If any outwork operation has been placed on a Purchase Order or RFQ, that operation cannot have it’s operation number or work centre changed while it is still subject to a PO or RFQ. If some of the WO has been received, or Shopfloor data collected for the final operation, the final operation number cannot be removed or changed, nor can a higher operation number be added to the WO route. However, the details of the final operation, including Work Centre, can be changed. If an assembly has a Process Route, you cannot eliminate all operations for a particular Work Order. At least one must remain.
Cancel	Aborts the process currently in session. The keyboard equivalent is the Esc key for Windows computers and Command-.(full stop or period) for the Mac.
OK	The OK button updates the data you have entered, or confirms the selection and/or processes the function you have called.

This window can be left open and you can readily switch between it and others by clicking on the desired window with the mouse.

Capacity Planning gives time information obtained from existing WO and Jobs and optionally MRP forecast requirements. The analysis is based on process route operation times and Work Centre parameters.

NOTE: Capacity Planning is not available to those who only have licensed the Inventory version of the program.

Introduction to Capacity Planning

Capacity Planning is the term used to describe analysis of actual or forecast Work Order and Job operations and the impact they have on Work Centre resources. The process can be run for created and incomplete Work Orders and Jobs, or to also include MRP forecast Work Order recommendations.

Capacity Planning does not create any data records in the data file. The process of analysis is carried out in terminal memory only. The only effect on data you can have is the change of Work Order completion dates.

Capacity Planning takes Operation data from Process Routes and Work Centre records and bases all scheduling calculations from the start of the day of each Work Order planned completion. For Jobs it takes each the individual Operation and uses it’s completion date. There is no scheduling of Operations within Jobs as that is controlled within Job maintenance.

With conventional positive Lag time, the start of the Operation is calculated back using the Set hours + Run hours times WO quantity + Lag hours as the duration in hours that the operation consumes Work Centre resources. This duration is then divided by the Work Centre hours per day to fix the start date and time in working hours for the Operation. The start time for this operation is then taken to be the end time for the preceding Operation, and so on until all operations are scheduled. This process is carried out for each Work Order included in the analysis. The dates are all taken from the Make calendar.

If the Lag time is negative, the run time of the preceding operation will be scheduled to start the absolute number of Lag hours before the start of the run time of this operation. In this way operations can be carried out partly in parallel.

TIP: If you set an operation’s Lag time at -0.01, the following operation will, in effect, run in parallel to it. However, if the run duration of the first operation is greater than the run duration of the following one, sequencing will fix the two run completion times to be the same.

If you leave a negative Lag Time on the last operation of a route, scheduling will be calculated using zero.

NOTE: In capacity planning operations of outwork work centres are scheduled on the positive Lag Time only. Such operations use setup and runtime for costing purposes only. Lag time enables you to correctly schedule for outwork processing duration between normal in-house work centre operations within the route.

WARNING: If part Lead Times are shorter than those calculated from Operation times, kitting of the Work Order may be recommended differently from MRP.

Each Work Order or Job Operation is scheduled backwards, relating processing duration at Work Centres to their capacity, yielding values of real dates and times. This conversion of hours to time assumes that the Work Order is passing through the Work Centres in isolation from all other Work Orders that may also need to be processed in the same Work Centres at the same time.

This approach is known as Infinite Capacity Planning. This means that in scheduling it assumes unlimited Work Centre availability to handle multiple Work Orders and Job Operations and makes no attempt to automatically smooth resource loading. If the analysis were to reschedule Operations so that a fixed limit of Work Centre activity was never exceeded, the system would have to make assumptions about prioritising that could be dangerous with respect to the supply of materials or deliveries to customers.

The Infinite model enables you to view the loading on Work Centres that will result from your current production objectives. You are then in a position to make decisions about load smoothing by changing Work Order completion dates or changing the capacity of Work Centres.

Make Days Calendar

This window enables you to review a Job Operation and re-schedule its due date by selecting a new date in the list. The window opens when you double-click on a job operation in the Work Centre Make-To List or in the Work Orders window which is opened by double-clicking on a load line in the Work Centre Loading Chart window.

Using the list on the right of the window you can select a new completion date. If you then confirm with an OK all Capacity Planning lists are re-calculated to reflect the new completion date.

Work Operations List

This window shows all operations to be carried out on Work Orders, Job Operations and, if selected, MRP forecast WOs. This listing is the base for other listings available under the Capacity Planning menu.

If MRP forecast Work Orders have been selected, they will be given a “Mnnnnn” Work Order Number. The ‘nnnnn’ is in sequence of the MRP planned completion date. Recommended orders are only included if they have not been marked as implemented during Create WOs from Results function in MRP. Icons in the Status column indicate Job Operations and work order status as shown in the icon key below the list.

Work Centre available, Start, Set, Run, Lag and End times are all shown in hours to 2 decimal places and must not be confused with hours and minutes. The End time and Available date is the exact point that the batch must be ready for the next operation, or for the assembly to be entered into stock. This point is then used to calculate back the Start time and Kit date for the commencement of the process operation. This point is then used as the End time and Available date for the preceding operation. By clicking on a list line you will select both the Work Order and the Work Centre of that line for use in further analysis in other capacity planning windows.

For Operations carried out in Outwork Work Centres (marked on the right with an appropriate icon), only the Lag Time is considered for scheduling purposes. The Setup and Run times are recorded on the Process Route for costing purposes. If you widen the window or scroll to the left, further Work Centre details are shown.
